The phrase "if puppeteers persist in thinking . . ." gives the impression that puppeteers DO think that way and, if they continue to think this way . . . whereas my impression is that you want to establish more of a subjunctive mood: "Perhaps the larger point is, that if puppeteers were only able to believe in the importance of their work, then it would be there (eventually?) when the audience returned."
