Puppets On Demand is pleased to announces its

2004 Summer Rod Puppet Workshop:

SHAPE AND MOVEMENT --Designing, Building and Performing Rod Puppets.

Come to Germany and create a rod puppet. Explore simple paper sculptures. Discover a shape for your own character. Basing our work on the foundations of classical sculpture, we leave each puppet white rather than painted, creating a world of stone sculptures. This will demand a very intense and exact movement for each individual character, as well as for the puppets in group scenes. This is a workshop geared for professional puppeteers, actors,/theater professionals, visual artists, students and teachers. English and German will be the main languages used to teach the workshop, with French and Spanish translation available.

The SHAPE and MOVEMENT workshop is divided into two components: building / designing and performing. The building / designing component takes place each morning and begins with a week of sketching and designing the character each participant would like to create. The paper sculpture method for sculpting will be taught and ample time given in order to learn and experiment with it, culminating in each person’s design brought to a three-dimensional paper sculpture. This type of sculpture, developed by Professor Albrecht Roser, permits artists of all levels to form very impressive sculptures with simple means.

The second week focuses on making the sculpture stable and long-lasting and creating the mechanical components . The control will allow a wide range of movement and expression while aiming to be lightweight and accessible to those without a degree in engineerering! Paper, foam, plastic glue and fabric will be used.

During the final week, the puppets will be assembled, painted and costumed.

After an hour break for lunch, the movement, manipulation and performance sessions take place. The first week centers on exploring the movment of a variety of kinds of simple puppets, as well as creating two very simple and fast-to-make puppets. These puppets will aid in our explorations. Exploring and experimenting with the movement of our own bodies will also be part of our learning. Enriching our exploration will be the warm-up and training of our own bodies as we seek to make stronger the connections between performer and puppet.

The discoveries made during the first week will be built upon during our second week of work. This week takes us to two facets: solo work with small rod puppets and ensemble work in small groups.. Games, exercises, feedback and lots of time to work, play and experiment make up this week’s work.

Our workshop ends by bringing several short pieces to life, some created during our first two weeks of work and some directed during this last week, all the time building on the work and ideas that came before. As our rod puppets are finished, they will be incorporated into a very simple and brief scene. Time to share our discoveries will be included, as well as a final Share Day, where we will perform for each other as well as for a small number of invited guests.

Come play, work and explore with us in the village of Cham, located in Germany’s most famous state, Bavaria. Our workshop takes place in the beautiful rooms of the „Städtische Galerie im Cordonhaus," a well-known public art gallery located in Cham, Bavaria. Southern Bavaria is one of the most beautiful areas of Germany, and Cham is right in the Bavarian forest, which boasts plentiful hiking, quaint towns, river sports and plenty of Germany’s famous biergartens! Cham is also only a three-hour train ride from the beautiful city of Prague as well as a two-hour ride from world-famous Munich.
