I'm not sure if anyone responded to this (my computer was offline for about a week and I'm catching up on email) but a wedge pattern would probably do the trick. To make pattern a perfect sphere out of foam you usually cut 8 wedges where the ratio of the height of the wedge to its width is 4:1. By varying the ratio of length to width and/or the number of wedges used you can create almost any sort of round shape.
