From: "Mathieu Rene" <uubald-AT-magma.ca> Subject: Re: PUPT: Puppetry awards Date: Tue, 3 Feb 2004 01:06:50 -0500 Here, in quebec (Canada), we have an award ceremony called "La soirée des Masques", to honour people in theater. Puppetry is not a category in it , so it must be considered as theater, I guess. I assume this because I worked with a genius composer who won a well deserved Masque last year for his soundtrack on a puppet show. I just checked out the categories, and nothing relates directly to puppetry. So the artists and technicians are in line with the rest of the theater crowd. There's costume design, lighting design, soundtrack...etc. What is a puppet, a prop? Like some people voiced in this very thread, I'd be thrilled if there was a specific puppetry category. Not for segregation, for recognition actually. Puppetry is very present in my Province, even though most of the population seems to be oblivious to it. Kind of underground, but lots of exportation. Puppet people I meet are all seasoned travelers, and play everywhere. But until this price is created, I wish there were puppet shows at least in the finalists. I don't consider puppetry to be less or more than theater, as it is one form of it. So Shakespeare is not more or less "real Theater" than a great puppet show, in my book. I just wish it was recognised as it's equal in category. And yes, I'm all for raising the bar on quality of performance. Just my twenty-three cents and a half on this topic.
