"His Dark Materials"  I believe is part of author  Phillip Pullman's 
trilogy which includes "Amber Spyglass" and another I can't recall.  The 
same critics also abhore Dan Brown's book, "DaVinci Code".  I think    "His 
Dark Materials" is yet another book to movie - let's change the story for 
film and entertainment value type of deal.  From what I understand, it has 
been altered so not to "offend anyone" and of course it will lose impact 
and add fluff.  It is a very well written, imaginative and thought 
provoking series of books.  Dan Brown's book is based on fact but a work of 
fiction.  Both challenge some christian ideology  and "the story", so seen 
as a threat by some.
