From: "Bear Town" <beartown-AT-bear-town.com> Subject: Re: PUPT: His Dark Materials on CBC Newsworld Date: Fri, 5 Mar 2004 20:50:37 -0500 My impression was that by "based on fact" Diane meant that Dan Brown based aspects of the book on historical, not that it was a true story. Personally I enjoy "speculative historical fiction" (is that what one would call this genre?) and I thought it was very clever the way historical and biblical elements were woven together. I hadn't thought about the parallels between it and His Dark Materials, which I'm familiar with but haven't actually read. I wonder how a puppet show based on the Da Vinci Code would be? " Having read the book, it is a "pot-boiler" to be sure, though not up to Ludlum or Ambler in their prime, nor Thomas Gifford (Minnesota's own mystery writer, "Wind Chill Factor"). I guess I'd say that DC is more: loosely based on some facts taken from the history of Christianity, mythological and historical fantasies, and conspiratorial devices. Shaken, not stirred. The line between fact and fiction gets crossed very quickly and without some knowledge of history and theology it's hard to separate. I guess that's why it provokes such a response, rather than being an entertaining yarn. My two cents.
