Pullman sees his books as the anti-Narnia books. As to the movie, that has been in the works for a while. One of the stumbling blocks to it was that he hadn't finished the last book in the series (Amber Spyglass) until 2000. I know the option was renewed shortly before I left Del Rey since we lost the mass market rights back to Yearling books when that happened. Last I heard was CGI was the spirit creator of choice. It would be interesting to see how Gollum might have changed that thinking slightly.
Over all I think he is a good writer and I know many children really like his work. I have some differences of opinion on the philosophies he puts forth, but I would not stop my kids from reading his work. It is a really good step up series for kids who are trying to read beyond Harry Potter.
