"Puppets on the Ridge"

July 29 through August 1, 2004

in downtown Asheville.
Check out our website at www.puppetsontheridge.com

Hello fellow puppeteers and puppet enthusiasts,

“Puppets on the Ridge” is going to be a great festival. This 4-day event will unite puppet enthusiasts from around the globe with the community of Western North Carolina through performances, historical and contemporary puppet exhibitions, educational workshops, a public parade, a specialized puppetry store, and various outreach activities. The Jim Henson International Festival of Puppet Theatre has granted us funding to expand our programming to the public.

Getting Around: Now don’t worry about having to walk all over Asheville – unless you want to. We have contracted with the Historic Asheville Trolley to take the puppeteers around town. How fun is that!

The Theaters: "Puppets on the Ridge" will feature 12 - 14 different productions covering a range of puppetry styles and representing a mix of regional, national, and international performers. Our host venue is the Diana Wortham Theatre, with smaller shows at ACT, the Artist Resource Center, the Bebe Theatre, the YMI Cultural Center, and NC Stage.

The Schedule: Of course this is all subject to change, but you get the idea.

Thursday – what a beginning to a festival!

Ø SCHROEDER CHERRY (Maryland) He will be performing "Underground Railroad, Not A Subway"

Ø The PARADE Thursday July 29, beginning at 3:30 PM , puppets will march through downtown Asheville announcing the beginning of the Festival. Bring your favorite puppet and join the fun. We have invited Community-based organizations here in Asheville to build their own puppets, masks and banners and perform along with the puppeteers. The parade will end with an outdoor performance presented free to the public in City County Plaza.

Ø Our opening performance will be the incomparable CASHORE MARIONETTES’ (Pennsylvania) “Simple Gifts”

Ø Late night Thursday, back at the hotel, we will have the opportunity to see “Frankenstein” presented by The Columbia Marionette Theater (South Carolina).

Friday – Everything for Friday has not been confirmed. Watch the web site for more information.
Ø Workshops in the morning – see below for some of the workshop leaders that have agreed to share their expertise.

Ø CRABGRASS PUPPET THEATER (Vermont) is returning to Asheville with their production The Brementown Musicians.

Ø BLAIR THOMAS (Illinois) will be presenting “Buster Keaton’s Stroll & Other Stories”.

Ø Late night back at the hotel is Potpourri. Don’t forget to bring your 5-MINUTE act. Drew has purchased his hook for anyone that goes one second over.

Saturday
Ø Workshops in the morning – see below for some of the workshop leaders that have agreed to share their expertise.

Ø WOOD AND STRINGS PUPPET THEATRE (Tennessee) will perform "ANANSE! Early in the Day" a musical tale from West Africa's folk tradition.

Ø Saturday afternoon you will have a choice of a couple different smaller performances. We are still working on this schedule. Visit the studio of John Payne, a second chance to see Schroeder Cherry, Curious Moon’s “Snip, Snip” (strictly adult material) and Tim Reed’s science show. Watch for more information on the web site soon.

Ø The evening will be spent at the Deerpark Restaurant on the Biltmore Estate for our banquet. (Just a note for those that would like visit the estate – puppeteers will be able to visit at a reduced ticket price of $29. – not included in your banquet ticket or your registration. The price is good a week before and a week after the festival, but you need to make arrangements in advance.)

Sunday
Ø Don’t plan to leave early. We will be having another performance on Sunday morning.

Ø And finally, Closing Ceremonies

EXHIBITIONS

Ø The Asheville Art Museum will host a special exhibit in their Holden Gallery featuring one type of puppets that influenced the Appalachian culture – limberjacks.

Ø Another collection of contemporary puppetry will be exhibited at the Asheville Area Arts Council's front gallery during the month of July. We are looking for your submissions to this exhibit. But remember, they will be in the exhibit the whole month of July so if your submission is in your current show, you will not be able to work that month.

WORKSHOPS

Festival mornings will be devoted to educational workshops held in conference rooms at the Sunspree Holiday Inn (the home base for out of town guests). Each of the 4 workshop sessions will offer five topics including a special tract for educators and librarians. There will be intermediate and advanced level classes in puppet construction, script writing, lighting, manipulation, vocal technique, and marketing. Junior workshops are offered for ages 6 -12 which involve the children in puppet making and performance. Here is a list of the confirmed workshops.
