From: NANCYSTAUB-AT-aol.com Date: Thu, 18 Mar 2004 12:09:19 EST Subject: PUPT: recent publications The February 2004 issue of American Theatre 21.2 features "Puppet Power,'' several articles about puppet theatre. www.tcg.org The cover is a photo of a new acquisition to the Center for Puppetry Arts collection, a devil donated by Jan Kostroun for the Fairy Tale House in the Czech Republic. Two others were reviewed in The Asian Theatre Journal 21.1 (Spring 2004) by Cobina Gillitt, listed as an independent scholar. She highly recommended Puppet Theater in Contemporary Indonesia: New Approaches to Performance Events Ed. Jan Mrazek, Michigan Papers on South and Southeast Asia, no. 50. Ann Arbor: Centers for South and Southeast Asian Studies, University of Michigan, 2002. 392 pp, cloth $70; paper $35. The reviewer stated that the editor wanted to stimulate readers to see and think about Indonesian shadow puppetry in new ways rather than adhere to the limited authoritative, self-referring body of "old scholarship."The focus is on experiencing wayang as a whole performance event through direct experience of the writer." Sounds great. The other reviewed is Mediums, Puppets, and the Human Actor in the Theatres of the East. By Poh Sim Plowright. Mellen Studies in Puppetry vol 4. Lewiston, NY: Mellen Press, 2002. 262 pp. $109.95. Ms Gillitt was less enthusiastic about this book that deals with the origins of puppetry in magic. She stated that "Poh Sim Plowright deftly illustrates just the kind of scholarship Mrazek hopes to abandon. "Plowright appears to be arguing for a spiritual origin of all theatres of the East." Sounds interesting. by the way, The Asian Theatre Journal 18.1 (Spring 2001) had several puppet articles. ATJ 19.2 (Fall 2002) contains a bibliography of past issues. There have been several articles, plays and reviews of puppetry included since the first issue. Best wishes.
