Thanks for the link, Andrew,

I saw one of the first performances of Ian's show last weekend and thought
it was one of the most interesting and well conceived productions I've seen
come out of the program, which I've been following with wonder and
enthusiasm for over 30 years now (I was an undergrad English major there
beginning in .... ahem....1971!). Talked to Bart today and he felt the show
had developed even further during the run. Wish I could see it again, but
alas the rest of the short run is sold out.

An interesting note is that, now that the floodgates have opened and modern
audiences are beginning to appreciate adult puppet theatre, most of the
UConn students seem focussed on that audience. All well and good- and I'm
obviously a big fan of adult puppet theatre- but to be realistic, our little
theatre presents approximately 320 shows a year for families, and about 30 a
year for adults. And we have a big adult season compared to most. So it's
doubly delightful to see students like Ian Sweetman, and past students like
Sarah Frechette and Jim Napolitano, developing great shows for children to
enjoy with their adults. Puppet theatre's often a child's introduction to
theatre, so making great theatre for them means we'll have an appreciative
audience for the adult work down the road.

By the way, the audience I was in last Saturday was comprised almost
entirely of adults, and as usual, the children attending asked some of the
most probing questions afterward at the "meet the artists". To hone this
show, Ian needs to perform it more for the intended audience... always a
problem when the show is at the university. Perhaps we could help by
bringing the kids we know next time!

my few pennies.

Karen
