The spokes from old umbrellas work very well. They even have a cool little
hinge thingy on the ends for mobility!

For small shadow puppet shows, or those done on an overhead projector, bamboo
skewers work well, and you can hinge them with masking tape. You can get a
gazillion of them in a pack for a buck at the dollar stores!
