Hi

The following is from another list, but as it is of relevance to this

Friends of Narrative:

At the ACLA conference recently, I learned that the publishing house
Heinemann's
is planning to cancel its recently inaugurated Asian Writers series. This
series has included such works as Tagore's Quartet and Kiran Nagarkar's
Seven Sixes are Forty Three. If handled properly, it could be the kind of
conduit for Asian writing that Heinemann's African Writers Series and
Caribbean Writers Series have been for authors from those regions.

Heinemann claims that the series has not been profitable. My feeling is
that they have failed to do adequate publicity, and that the market for
Asian and South Asian writing is growing rapidly.

If you agree with this judgment, please write to Heinemann's representative
James Lance (jiml-AT-heinemann.com) and voice your concerns about the
cancellation of the series. Jim has been discouraged about this corporate
decision, and thinks it could be overturned given enough expression of
public support.

Also, please pass along this news, and Jim's email address, to other
friends and networks, so we can spread the word.

Thanks for your help.
