It is institutionized and commodified not only on the internet but also in
academia and the art world.

Sorry for this short hand, but I remember presenting a couple of papers
about this, and have people (usually the aforesaid brown gals and "other"
minorities) love it, or hate it (usually middle aged liberal white
academics/artists).
