Some of the key areas of inquiry and debate that we consider significant include issues such as copyright, intellectual property rights, and market trends; culturally specific practices surrounding pop music; trans-national cultural and capital flows; cultural formations in relation to tradition, appropriation, and innovation in pop music; the relation between communication technologies, geographic boundaries of the nation-state, and audience constituencies for pop music in a global arena; relations between pop music and gender, race, and class. This Symposium will run in Perth for two days in late September, 1997. We expect to schedule 45 minute papers (including questions) from approximately twelve speakers. We also intend to organise a performance evening. Expressions of interest should be sent by 17 March 1997.
