We hope that you will also be able to help out in the Bangladesh tragedy. Please also kindly forward this appeal to your friends on your email list. in solidarity, Elizabeth Wong Coordinator SUARAM ------------------------------------------------------------- URGENT APPEAL Dear comrades and friends, I am writing to you all describing the current flood situation of Bangladesh. I am mentioning the situation in details. A devastating flood has been sweeping over the Bangladesh for the last eight days and it is still going on claiming 140 lives. Nearly 150 crore people of 37 districts has been affected by the flood as; more areas were submerged by the on rush of waters from across the border. Millions of people of 37 districts in Bangladesh are inundated with the rise of water. The gushing waters from upstream would aggravate the flood forecasting and warning center. The overall flood situation deteriorated yesterday with further rise of water levels in the country's three major rivers. The major river including the Brahmaputra (Jamuna), Ganges (Padma) and Meghna continued to rise and flowing above their danger levels at 20 points across the north, north western, and central parts of the county. According to disaster management ministry estimates, the number of the affected people stands at 7,502,109 as the flood hit 12119 unions of 174 thanas is 33 districts. Chittagong, Comilla, Madaripur and Jamalpur are the worst hit districts where the flood disrupted the lives of millions of people. The overall situation may deteriorate further in the central part of the country, including the greater Dhaka districts, experts said. Different types of diseases such as Cholera, Diarrhoea, Dysentery have been broken out epidemically in the flood-hit districts. Underage children and old aged people are more victim and dying of these diseases regularly. Dearth of pure drinking water is prevailing in the districts. Enough relief food, clothes, pure drinking water and medicine don't reach the people. In a report we are know that several thousand people already have passed without relief materials. Their suffering worsened for lack of safe water and medicine. Govt. and other Non government organization have taken different measures to help the people but that are not enough. Moreover, women and children are made more vulnerable. Peasants have become bewildered because all crops have been damaged. Maximum industries and factories implanted in the flood-hit area have been closed and workers are now jobless and it is very difficult for them to take even half of a meal. Our organization already has taken various measures to help the flood affected people. You know our resources are very constrained. So we appeal to all to extend helping hand to us.
