Subject: Virtual Speech Announcement
VIRTUAL SPEECH SERIES
[THIS TIME ITS ON THE WEB]
_____________________________________________
The next "Virtual Speech" begins January 15th 1997
at http://www.pitt.edu/~gajjala/virtual-nancy.html
To participate, you just need to interact via the guestbook,
no need to subscribe to any lists. If you have
any questions contact me at
gajjala+-AT-pitt.edu
The Virtual Speech series was started in the Summer of
1996 for the virtual dissemination of knowledges.
The first speaker was Professor John Beverley of
University of Pittsburgh. His paper can still be
viewed at http://www.pitt.edu/~gajjala/virtual-john.html.
The discussion took place at a Spoon Collective
site - seminar-13. The archives are available via
the spoon homepage (http://jefferson.village.virginia.edu/~spoons).
FYI, the previous announcement is attached to this one.
The Professor Nancy Condee of the Slavic Languages and Literature
Department at the University of Pittsburgh
has volunteered to do the next virtual speech.
This time, we plan to set this up via the world-wide-web.
The paper will be can be viewed (starting January 15th, 1997) at
http://www.pitt.edu/~gajjala/virtual-nancy.html
and we will use the guestbook format for interaction.
Dr. Nancy Condee's paper is entitled :
"The Second Fantasy Mother, or All Baths are Women's Baths"
___________________________________________________
The paper is about Russian women's contemporary,
urban bath-house, or *bania*.
"The women's baths, are a site where the rites of
female purity are enacted as the physical manifestation
of other forms of purity (spiritual, sexual, psychological).
The household is reconstituted within this arena of
symbolic celibacy, using the vehicle of the female body and
including a period of obligatory, inert leisure before returning
to the outside world. Bathing is secular worship, wherein
pleasure is closely linked to duty and ritual and whereby
the debauch of the men's baths (if only in legend and
fantasy) has no place."
- Nancy Condee , "The Second Fantasy
Mother, or All Baths are Women's Baths"

ANNOUNCING A
SERIES OF VIRTUAL SPEECHES
(for the virtual dissemination of knowledges)
The Virtual Site is "Seminar-13" a space
provided by the Spoon Collective.
The Process: The "speaker" sends out a text of
hir speech either to me at
gajjala+-AT-pitt.edu (and I will forward
the "speech" to seminar-13) or to
the list, after the speech has been advertised
for at least a week. The speech will be sent
out in parts or all at once depending on the length of
the text.
The virtual audience will have about a week or
so to read the text and respond with comments,
questions and so on. The "speaker" will engage in
discussion with the audience for a limited amount of time.
The "speech" and the discussion that follows
will also be placed at a website so that those
of you who do not want to receive large messages
can access the speech from the web.
The First Speech:
The First speech will be held at seminar-13
(of spoon collective fame).
It will be sent out in the second week of
May (and placed at the website).
You will be informed about when and how to
interact with the "speaker"
soon after the virtual speech is sent out
(if it is long, you will receive
it in "chewable" parts)
About the Speaker:
