and at last i get back to this list - what with repeating posts on the
poco list and being the moderator of the month for sawnet ... i neglected
this list for a while

which, by the way seems to be just me and Enok?

Regarding E's qs -
As I use and understand the phrase - "community through memory" in the
context of my paper and in the context of postcolonial "diaspora" is
rooted in third-world nationalist imagining of community.

I would have to explain Partha Chatterjee's argument re. the Indian
nationalist movement etc - will do this in a future post - if it becomes
necessary.

There is a body of literature that discusses the manner in which
"diasporic" communities' attempt to create and re-create a "shared
diasporic sensibility" (Nelson)
And, apparently, this creation of community through a kind of *imagined*
memory is not restricted to Indian immigrants.

In beginning to respond to your question, I will refer you to two articles
-
"The Shrinking Himalayas" by Indira Karamcheti; ~Diaspora' 2:2 1992
"The Habit of Ex-Nomination:Nation, Woman and the Indian Immigrant
Bourgeoisi" by Annanya Bhattacharjee; Public Culture- Vol 5 No.1 Fall
1992.
