An example of a story would be my mother's, who only went to school until
5th grade and after that, in order to be "brought up" to social standards
demandedby my father's professional position etc, and side by side in
accordance with the nationalist movement's emphasis on a certain
(limited) amount of education for women, she was taught to read and write
Hindi (at the time that my father got involved with the Gandhian wave) and a
certain amount of English (esp when my father decided to go abroad etc).

of course this is only a partial story.
