     Hello All,

The list has been quiet for some time, so I guess now would be a good
time to post an introduction. My name is Dominic Dela Cruz and I am a
23 year old,third-generation American of Pilipino descent living in
the San Francisco bay area. While I majored in polical science at the
University of California, Riverside, I've always mantained a stong
interest in literature and would prefer to do graduate work in this
field. At present, I'm working as a faceless bureacrat in the UC
administrative offices but try to keep in touch with academia through
     various email lists and newsgroups.

I stumbled into seminar-13 because it seems to intersect with many
topics which interest me (identity construction, the role of South
Asian women in the "first world.") Hopefully, when I do return to do
graduate work, the things I learn from all of you will help me
understand what are some very complex issues.

I also have a question for everyone here. The reason I waited so long
to post an introduction is that I'm not sure if I meet the
requirements for participating in this seminar. What are the lines of
demarcation for South Asian as opposed to Asian? Are these simply
geographic boundaries or does it refer to some other set of historical
     and cultural factors?

     Dominic
