International Conference on Globalization, Education and Language November 15-16, 2002 Tamkang University Tamsui, Taipei, Taiwan, ROC Call for Papers The development of a seemingly totalizing globalization, amid increasing opposition, is having a dramatic impact on nearly every aspect of human existence. The present conference is organized out of a deep concern for our future. Tamkang University invites scholars from all relevant fields to explore language, education and related issues in a globalizing world. Papers for the following sections are welcome: Section 1: Globalization Reconsidered We invite contributions that critically assess the current debate on globalization. What are the major theoretical entry points? What are their limits and practical consequences? Section 2: Globalization and Educational Policies How do educational policies in different regions of the world and at different locations within those regions respond to the impact of globalization? How do educational policies balance regional and local traditions with the challenges of the global arena? Which debates on this issue are or have been dominating the scenes locally and regionally? Section 3: Globalization, English, and Linguistic Diversity How can/do we negotiate a balance between hegemonic English and weakened local languages (and other world languages) so that linguistic diversity is maintained?. What does this concern imply for the teaching of foreign languages, theoretically and pedagogically? Those interested please send paper title, abstract of 500 words or less, and author's vita before May 15, 2002 to: Department of English College of Foreign Languages and Literatures Tamkang University Tamsui, Taipei County Taiwan Submissions by Email welcome: corlog-AT-mail.tku.edu.tw Registration fee: $US50.00 A limited number of participants will be provided with room and board during the period of the conference.
