philosophy conference hosted by the University of Utah. We request that you

academic institution. Also, we would appreciate it if you would announce the
conference to your classes.

 2004 INTERMOUNTAIN WEST STUDENT PHILOSOPHY CONFERENCE

Scope. Papers on any philosophical topic from graduate students and advanced
undergraduate students are welcome. We encourage submissions in both western
and eastern philosophy as well as in both analytical and continental
traditions. Undergraduate students must submit at least one letter of
recommendation from a faculty member who is familiar with the student's
paper.

Scholarship. By submitting a paper, students will be considered for a $100
scholarship. Two scholarships will be offered, one for an undergraduate
submission and one for a graduate student submission.

Conference Format. The conference format will be symposium-style. Each
session will include a presentation, commentary, and discussion period.

 Submission requirements. Papers should be no longer than 3,000 words. When
you submit a paper for consideration, please include the following items on
a separate sheet:

(1) word count;
(2) presentation title;
(3) an abstract of no more than 100 words;
(4) author's name;
(5) academic status (graduate or undergraduate student);
(6) institutional affiliation;
(7) mailing address;
(8) email address;
(9) telephone number; and
(10) areas of philosophical interest.

Submissions that fail to include all of the above items will be rejected. No
more than one submission per author will be considered. Authors should email
their submission as an attachment in Word, Wordperfect, pdf or dvi format to
utahphilgrad-AT-msn.com. Authors are also encouraged to paste a copy of their
paper in the body of the email to ensure that we receive their submission.

Deadline. Papers must be received no later than January 1, 2004.
Notification of acceptance will be emailed by January 23, 2004. Authors
accepted for presentation will be expected to comment on another paper
unless otherwise arranged with the Conference Committee.

Those interested only in commenting should send a note with their name,
institutional affiliation, and areas of philosophical research to
utahphilgrad-AT-msn.com no later than January 13, 2004. Participants shall pay
a $20.00 registration fee at the conference. Registration fee will cover
conference dinner and reception following keynote speech.

Housing. Some University of Utah graduate students will allow visitors to
stay with them during the conference, or conferees are welcome to stay at
the University's Guest House (801/416-4075). Conferees should email
utahphilgrad-AT-msn.com for more information regarding housing options.

Extra-curricular Activities. Salt Lake City, the host of the 2002 Winter
Olympic Games, is a haven for winter sport enthusiasts. Conferees are
encouraged to enjoy the great outdoors while visiting the area. On Friday
and Sunday, excursions to local attractions will be available to conferees.
