I just sub'd to the new and improved mailing list..

however, barrett has kindly forwarded the gist of discussion on
having an online exhibition.

I think the idea is an excellent one, one that I have been
hoping to see for some time.

some thoughts from my end:

(1) Space. In a varity of capacities I can see that we have
ample space. The pharmdec WWW server that currently houses
the 'Surrealism Server' is the least of places, but not my primary
recommendation as access is limited, and i think it would be
best to have an exhibit as a free standing entity. I can get
us space at sunsite.unc.edu which currently mirrors the SITO
galleries (formerly OTIS: http://www.stio.org/). For those of
you who don't know about SITO, check it out. I've been a member for
a couple of years, and it's where I first got online experience
doing graphics and other arts related things on the internet.
The SYNERGY:CORPSE, SYNERGY:GRID and SYNERGY:PANIC projects
provide examples of using net technology for realtime and
'surrealist' endeavors (CORPSE, e.g.). Lastly, art.net, current
home to SITO would probably let us have space to set something
up: http://www.art.net/. I can inquire there if there is interest.

On the other hand, I think it is a worthwhile task to put a
'prospectus' together, and submit it as a proposal to
various organizations/museums who would be interested in
such an exhibition.

(2) Funding. Funding is relative. Do we want to have the exhibit
on a commercial site for which we would have to pay? Do we want
to have an overall curator/organizer who will be paid for their
efforts? I sense that many participants do not have the technology
at hand to scan in images/generate graphics, hypertext in which case all
material could be sent to a single person who would perform these
tasks. Advertising in journals and arts magazines?

(3) Scope: Again, much of (1) and (2) hinges around what
will be done, and the scope of the exhibition. I encourage
everone to THINK about the multimedia nature of the web and
how this can be used to create INTERACTIVE sites, installations
and exhibits. Moreover, the putting together of an online
exhibition of 'Surrealist' exhibition implies that we
are using the technology to further our thoughts and ideas.
In spite of the recent fad of having 'online art exhibits' i
can think of few, if any, that have made good use of the
technology.

More after some hours of sleep..
