From: lynn-AT-pharmdec.wustl.edu (Lynn Bry) Subject: Re: exhibition (general) Date: Tue, 11 Jun 1996 01:55:18 -0500 (CDT) It seems that we should perhaps be considering two independent concepts of an 'exhibition' -- and most certainly, one can readily follow the other. (1) WWW Exhibition -- which I would recommend as the first endeavor to see if a committed group within this list can generate enough material to put together as a coherent online 'exhibit.' It would be limited only to those who are online or have access to the internet in some form or fashion. There has yet to be a concerted (i.e. international) effort on the internet showcasing ideologies of surrealism using current technologies. Space: Again, sunsite is good for 10 or so MB of space. Currently the entirety of the Surrealism Server + the 'Mechanical Garden' consume 12 MB of space (http://pharmdec.wustl.edu/juju) including the cache of images, text and CGI scripts. We can put something decent together with this amount of MB. Once we *have* something of interest that is pushing 10MB or more, *then* we can worry about the need for more. Forseeing that such would happen I can go further into no-budget/low-budget alternatives.. Scope: Do we do this as a one-shot deal.. as an ongoing 'zine'/evolving gallery? Create a breakdown of sections: prose/poetry/graphics/history/installations.. etc.. Have an editor/editorial board to oversee specific sections. Cost: How much do you pay to use this listserv and surf the internet? (2) 'General' Exhibition -- which could include contributions from groups that do not have internet connectivity. It could be manifested as a WWW exhibit backed by a 'real-time' exhibit at locationX (or vice versa). Any 'real-time' exhibit or publication will require $$$. As a group we will be in a much better position to ask for funding if we have a tangible WWW site illustrating that we are a viable group that exists on an ongoing basis. We can also work out the 'kinks' of putting exhibition catalogs/publications together by experimenting with layouts and formats on the web. In both cases, *TIME* is the key point. How much time are people willing to devote to create materiel, and format it for the web? How many people on this listserv are willing to participate in the direct creation of the site? As impetus that space can be acquired, I offer the following: http://sunsite.unc.edu/~inxju/ If you've got Netscape2.0 or some java-capable browser, you can play with the simple 'scribble-pad' -- something more complicated might be of use in an interactive installation. The 'idiot-poem' link shows a text-based version of 'poor-man's' animation. To create this sort of thing requires 2 fingers and a word-processing program. -ln p.s. - Incite the formation of 'Groupe Virtuelle du Mouvement Surrealiste' (sic).
