I am going to resist the temptation of putting words into the mouth
of our dead friends AB and BP. If Luke had actually said in his mail
that he was in favour of religion, I would have subscribed to
William's rant, as it is it seems on the face of it an over-reaction.
Luke was quite right to point out a few things, such as an interest
in religion does not make one a christian etc. As for me, well I too
am an atheistwho finds religion interesting. Certain areas of
religious study are quite rewarding, and an understanding of notions
of the sacred are essential to an understanding of Surrealism.
However, the distance between Surrealism and religion is immense.

Unfortunately Luke spoiled it all by making some damn silly remarks
in his counter-rant. So you want to destry Surrealism do you? Is that
not a wee bit over-ambitious? Should you not have a rather more
secure understanding of it first? And even then, with what power
could you? Is it just a joke? Not funny enough!

And then there is this curious statement that religion is fundamental
to surrealism. Without explanation this is meaningless and easy to
dismiss.

Worst of all, Luke, you seem to have succumbed to some vulgar and
silly notions about Breton and Peret.

But at least you made a brave attempt at something. What on earth is
Arden Hill on about? Are all his messages going to so empty, so
vapid, such drivel?

Stuart
