I speak from absolute ignorance here, but when has that stopped me
before?  To me, the mention of the principle of the excluded middle
(which, I assume is what is meant by "excluded third term") suggests
that "smoothing out" has to do with filling the gaps between binary
oppositions, between the statement and its negation, so as to create
between them a continuous (smooth) "line" of in-betweens.  Does that
make any sense?
