Yet there are transformations; the work force is becoming more and
more flexible, and smaller; labor from so-called "underdeveloped"
countries supplies a lot of that technology. What you are describing
is Marx's concept of alienation in the 1844 Notebooks. Something else
is involved in the use of the pronoun, however, and that is the
prosthetic nature of the newer technologies which no longer seem
mediations in any sense but an incorporated part of the body. In this
respect I refer you to Merlin Donald's *Origins of the Modern Mind*
which I'm currently reading.
