NOT THE SAME: DEVELOPING A STRATEGY ON DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND SEXUAL ASSAULT
FOR NON-ENGLISH SPEAKING BACKGROUND WOMEN.

FRIDAY AND SATURDAY 22ND AND 23RD MARCH

MELBOURNE PARK (FORMERLY FLINDERS PARK): BATMAN AVENUE MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA.

Organised by:
The Domestic Violence and Incest Resource Centre
Immigrant Women=92s Domestic Violence Service
Women in Industry and Community Health
Victorian Community Council Against Violence

Sponsored and Supported by the Office of the Status of Women
Endorsed by the Department of Immigration and Ethnic Affairs

Women from immigrant backgrounds are more likely to be murdered as a result
of domestic violence than are their Australian-born counterparts; and are
less likely to receive appropriate support from services when they seek to
leave a violent relationship. Yet there is currently no systematic policy
outline or firection to address their needs.

AIMS OF THE CONFERENCE?
The Conference will be an attempt to move away from yet another restatement
of the issues. Instead the conference will adopt the following format, with
the emphasis being on the development of a clear practical strategy.

The aim of such a strategy will be:
* To improve the overall responsiveness of all relevant community services
and programs to the needs of migrant women victim/survivors of domestic
violence and sexual assault.
* To improve the design, planning and co-ordination of services to NESB
women within and between government and non-government sector.
* To enhance workers=92 and agencies capacity to respond appropriately and
effectively to the rights and needs of NESB women victim/survivors of
domestic violence and sexual assault.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
It is anticipated that the conference participants will include : Relevant
government departments, workers from relevant community agencies, police,
court officials, peak ethnic community organisations, ethno-specific
agencies, migrant resource centres, domestic violence service, academics,
students, and interested individuals.

The final strategy shall be presented to the minister for Women=92s Affairs,
the Hon. Jan Wade, as part of the wider strategy by the Victorian Community
Council Against Violence. The strategy will be launched at a National
Conference in June, organised by the BIMPR where its National implications
shall be considered.
