Lisa,

It's not a strictly feminist critique, but on a related note, I remember
hearing a radio report (on Pacifica I believe) during last year's
major UN Conference for Women in Bejing. The report was blasting the
conference for not being wheelchair accessible, nor congenial to
many other persons with disabilities. I remember hearing a hearbreaking
speech delivered from off-stage by a woman who uses a wheelchair about
how angry and hurt she was that she had spent so much money and invested
so much energy getting to the Confrence to speak, and she could not even
get on stage because there were no ramps.

The report had many other stories. Its been a while, and my memory is foggy,
but perhaps you could find it through Lexus/Nexus searching radio for
that conference and a few disabilities keywords.

I hope this is of some use, and if not, at least interesting.

By the by, I am a male subscriber to this list. Earlier in grad school
I took a seminar on Women and Development, and I guess then I became
sensitive to the situation of women in low-income countries. I hope
no one minds my presence onthis list; if you do, plase let me know.

While I am 'on the air,' I'd be remiss not to use at least one sentence
to denouce that atrocious post by Beaty-AT-aol.com soliciting so-called
'mail order brides.' The last place I expected to run into that
modern day slave market waws on this list. I sas more than
"offended", as s/he said.

Take care,

PS: Lisa, if you do not have access to Lexus/Nexus, let me know and
I'll be happy to run a few searches through the machine at work.
