Dear Mary
your projetc sounds fascinating - what discipline is your PhD registered in I wonder.
Have you looked at Janice Boddy's book 1989 'Wombs and Alien Spirits: Women, Men and
the Zar Cult in Northern Sudan' Univ. Wisconsin Press - according to the cover blurb (i have
not read the book in depth) that spirit possession is a feminist discourse, focus of
resistance for women etc. Not sure if it's what you are after.

My own PhD work is in Northern Nigeria and i know of several works on spirit possession
there known as bori but not all focus on women. one that does is a chapter by Nicole
Echard 'Gender relationships and religion: women in the Hausa Bori of Ader, Niger' in
Catherine Coles & Beverly Mack (eds) 1991 'Hausa Women in the Twentieth Century' Univ.
Wisconsin Press.

hope these could be helpful
