WOC Alert 8/13/96:
Women Relegated to Role of Cheerleaders at RNC

With football metaphors flying through the air, and Pat Buchanan
declaring, "before our eyes... this party is becoming a Buchanan
party," Republican women have been relegated to the position of
cheerleaders for men who despise their viewpoint. Tonight's head
cheerleader will be Susan Molinari. For reports from "Behind Enemy
Lines," make sure you visit the Women Leaders Online web site at
http://wlo.org/woc/news. We will be publishing reports on the
Republican convention collected by c.c. watch and our own
correspondents. These reports will be updated daily throughout the
convention.

______

Report from Behind Enemy Lines at the Republican National Convention;
San Diego -- August 13, 1996 -- It is amazing what isn't covered on
television. Take yesterday, for instance. Here we were -- pro-choice
Republicans -- gathered on the floor for the adoption of the appendix.
This was our sole victory; for the first time, the Republican
platform would mention (even if it was as a minority plank) that
pro-choice Republicans even existed! And guess what happened? We
were attacked by the right wing delegates. "Libertines!" they yelled.
(Now there's a word you don't hear everyday in the secular press.)
"Get out! Get out of our party!" The harassment was so great that we
had to leave the floor. The delegates WOULDN'T EVEN LET US ENJOY OUR
ONE SMALL VICTORY.

There was one other curious thing that happened. During all this
fight, New Jersey Governor Christie Whitman was nowhere to be seen. I
know she's here, because I see her on television. But I sure haven't
seen her here fighting for the pro-choice forces.

More later.
Sojourner Truth, from Behind Enemy Lines.
