POSITION IN LATINA STUDIES

The Women's Studies Department at the University of Maryland invites
applications for a full-time tenure track / tenured position in Latina
Studies to begin August 1999. Rank is open (funding has been secured at the
level of assistant professor, appointment at a higher rank is dependent on
additional funding). Teaching responsibilities include
core Women's Studies courses at the undergraduate and
graduate level and courses in the candidate's area of
expertise.

The Women's Studies Department and Program at UM College Park is
multidisciplinary and multicultural, with nine core faculty and more than
seventy affiliate faculty. We are one of the oldest Women's Studies programs
in the United States, with strong and continuing institutional support. We
have a major in Women's Studies, an undergraduate certificate, and a strong
graduate certificate program. Pending approval, we expect to have a Ph.D.
program in place by Fall 2000. Housed in Women's Studies are the editorial
offices of the leading journal Feminist Studies, and the nationally
recognized University of Maryland Curriculum Transformation Project. Faculty
in Women's Studies have also been leaders in the development of campus wide
initiatives on diversity, including the Asian American Studies Program, the
Africa and the Americas Project, Jewish Studies, and
Lesbian and Gay Studies. Most recent among these is the
newly established Consortium on Race, Gender and Ethnicity,
a cross-disciplinary research center designed to promote and
advance scholarship, support collaborative research, and facilitate
communication beyond the university on issues in this field. The National
Women's studies Association is housed on our campus.

The candidate should have a Ph.D. in Women's Studies, Latina/o Studies,
Latin American Studies, Ethnic Studies or related disciplines. Completion of
Ph.D. preferred by September 1999. Teaching responsibilities include core
Women's Studies courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels and courses
in the candidate's area of expertise. Demonstrated commitment to and
excellence in teaching, research, and publication required, appropriate to
rank, with consideration of community activities. Grant
writing potential will be expecially appreciated.

Application should include C.V., three letters of recommendation, and cover
letter describing teaching experiences, research and publication agendas,
interests in campus and community activities, and their interconnections
with your development as a scholar. For best consideration,
send application by December 4, 1998.
