GroundWork would like to invite you to the following training session on
Participatory Research and Action Planning. During the course, examples
will be drawn from the area of gender, as well as other development topics.
Training Workshop in Participatory Research and Action Planning,
Washington DC, October 27-30, 1999
This is a workshop that will give you practical experience of participatory
research and action, with special reference to the needs of individuals
working in international development/donor organizations. The workshop is
limited to 15 people.
The workshop is offered by GroundWork, a newly-formed international
consortium of consultants who specialize in bridging national and local
perspectives to create meaningful policy and more effective local
development. One of its expert areas is the creation of research and design
tools for grass-roots and for high-tech applications in development.
The workshop will cover these questions:
· What is participatory research and action?
· How is it done?
>> workshop sessions on techniques
>> field work session in a local Washington setting
>> handling and analyzing the resulting data:
· When is it useful? When is it not?
· How can participatory research be used by organizations?
· How can participatory research can be used in the project cycle, and as
part of larger research projects?
The course:
You will participate in workshop sessions and one day of field work in a
local Washington setting. The workshop sessions are practical, and will
give you the opportunity to learn how to carry out a selection of basic
techniques. Examples will be drawn from the areas of education, poverty
alleviation, microfinance gender, health and environment. Course materials
will include a comprehensive manual, and a workbook for designing
participatory tools for your own special area of interest.
WHAT WILL THE WORKSHOP EQUIP YOU TO DO?
At the end of the workshop, you should be able to:
· join a participatory exercise or project as an informed assistant
· commission participatory research and prepare useful terms of
reference
· know whether and where you can use participatory research in a project
or in a larger piece of research
· know how participatory research can be used in your organization
