Dear Radhika,

I have a very interesting and earnest student who would like to build a web
page and network for the study of women and Islam. He is Pakistani and has
taken up the idea that a gender analysis is a useful tool for thinking about
Islam. I will suggest to him that he write to the third-world list with the
most recent query he sent to me. I thought I would let you know about him
because he is a budding cyberdiva in a very interesting way. To pursue a
gender analysis is dangerous ground for him in some circles and part of the
reason why he is turning to the web to pursue his activism. Our resident
Islamic studies scholar has attempted to shame him by asking if something
was "wrong" with him (i.e. was he gay) in front of a class when Aman tried
to raise questions about women and Islam. That's fairly personal information
for me to pass along to you, but I'm hoping that he might find some support
among the cyberdivas. I wanted to let you know he is a courageous student
and if you knew his name, you might keep your eye out for his work.

Cheers,

Mary Keller
